ARTIST & TEACHING STATEMENT:

I come to poetry as a spiritual searcher who is devoted to a lifelong study of the craft. The greatest gifts I've received from my mentors are their presence, their understanding, and their trust in the writing process. I hope to pass on what I've been given. It seems to me that poetry is an attempt to really see something. Now, whether that happens or not, the effort is something to strive for.

This is an excellent workshop for poets in all stages of their career/writing life. The craft of poetry is explored in a variety of ways, through videos, text, and discussion. The material was thought provoking and practical. I was introduced to a couple of fantastic poets and their poems. The poetry prompts were interesting to work with and helped me generate new pieces. Instructor Lisa Young quickly responded to questions and provided super helpful, detailed feedback on three poems. At the end of the workshop, I felt excited about my poetry as well as eager to go back to the poems to experiment with Lisa's suggestions.

I was recommended to take this course in order to start learning the Craft as I embark on the next phases of my book, and am extremely grateful for the suggestion. The content was well laid out in terms of trajectory of learning curve. It was the appropriate amount of heaviness of intellectual and concrete information, not too heady and not too light. There were a lot of sources used which were used well in rounding out the points that were made throughout the course. There were also a series of talks of various lengths and types which made the course even more captivating. Overall, am excited to take away my learnings and continue to better my Craft. Thank you, Lisa! DW

“Poetry: Navigating The Revision Process” is an affordable and engaging course offered by The Wychwood Poetry Workshop, that goes beyond revision basics. This seven-class course invites participants to examine approaches to revising poetry through in-depth analysis and review of matters relating to craft, including but not limited to: form, dictation, rhythm, sound, and line breaks. Poetry by renowned poets Ellen Bass, Billy Collins, William Carlos Williams, and Charles Wright with literary advice by writers Stephen Dobyns, Richard Hugo, and Denise Levertov among others, are a vital part of course content. Discussions on poetic techniques found in such poems reinforce concepts taught and the importance of literary form. Impressions: I found the instructor personable and thorough in her presentation style. I appreciated commentary being available by audio and transcription. The downloadable workbook is an excellent resource. Copies of course materials (poems, exercises) were clear and provided in sequence for ease of reference. The Ultimate Revision Checklist is succinct and a valuable revision guide. I highly recommend this course to poets seeking to strengthen their writing, independently edit, and create works with lasting impact. Lisa Reynolds-Jones
